Gambling Commission unveils latest insights on financial risk assessment pilot

The Gambling Commission’s Director of Major Policy Projects and Evaluation, Helen Rhodes, has shared key findings on financial risk assessments following the completion of the first phase of an ongoing pilot program.

Launched in May 2023, the initiative explores frictionless financial risk assessments by analyzing data from gambling operators and credit reference agencies. However, during this pilot phase, assessments are not being conducted in real-time.

The pilot officially began in September 2024 and is set to run until April 2025. With the first of three stages now concluded, the initial phase focused on reviewing historical data from inactive customers. This helped assess data quality, deepen understanding, and identify potential implementation challenges.

The first stage, described as a “pilot within the pilot,” involved 530,000 financial risk assessments across approximately 300,000 accounts, conducted in collaboration with three credit reference agencies. Notably, 95% of these assessments successfully met the criteria for a frictionless process.

Among the remaining 5%, just over 4% failed due to the credit reference agency being unable to identify the customer, resulting in a lack of available data. Less than 1% were affected by data formatting errors, invalid entries, or duplicate records.

Based on these findings, the Gambling Commission stated that future stages will focus on improving operators’ understanding of different credit reference agency systems to enhance the assessment process.

Separately, the regulator recently released a report analyzing the correlation between gambling behaviors and Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores, drawing insights from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB).
