ACMA investigation uncovers gambling ad violations in NSW

Network Ten (Sydney) was found to have violated advertising restrictions four times during last year’s Australian F1 Grand Prix.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found Network Ten (Sydney) in violation of advertising regulations during the 2024 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

According to the Australian Commercial TV Code of Practice, gambling ads must not be broadcast during live sports events between 5:00 AM and 8:30 PM. Additionally, such advertisements are prohibited within five minutes before or after the event.

The ACMA investigation identified four instances where Network Ten breached these rules by airing gambling ads during the first practice session of the Grand Prix. However, no penalties or regulatory actions have been announced against the network at this time.

This marks Network Ten’s first breach of gambling advertising regulations, which the network has attributed to human error.

Addressing the issue, ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood emphasized: “TV regulations on gambling advertisements exist to safeguard the community from gambling-related harm.

“Broadcasters must enforce strict measures to ensure adherence to restrictions on gambling ads during sports broadcasts. The ACMA will continue to monitor these matters closely, along with Network Ten’s compliance with broadcasting and online gambling advertising rules.”

Recently, the Western Australian government reinforced its gambling laws by introducing stricter penalties and enhanced enforcement powers in early February.

Meanwhile, Google updated its gambling ad policy last week, and the Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) issued several warnings regarding advertising restrictions in the country.

Just yesterday, the Advertising Standards Council of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding to combat illegal betting advertisements nationwide.
