With the rapid evolution of digital technologies, protecting minors in the online space has become an increasingly pressing issue.
A recent event at the European Parliament underscored the increasing priority of safeguarding minors in the online gambling sector.
Organized by The European Lotteries (EL), the gathering brought together EU policymakers, industry experts, and key stakeholders to discuss strategies for fostering a safer digital environment for young users.
Held on February 5, 2025, the discussion revolved around the pressing need for stronger protective measures in the digital space.
Addressing the issue, MEP Tomislav Sokol (EPP, Croatia) emphasized: “While digital advancements offer many advantages, they also pose serious threats to minors, including risks to mental health, exposure to harmful content, addictive design elements, and exploitative online practices.”
The European Parliament’s forthcoming initiative report on protecting minors online highlights the need to shape future EU policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of young users in the digital landscape.
MEP Bogdan Zdrojewski (EPP, Poland), Vice-Chair of the Culture and Education Committee, reaffirmed this commitment, stating: “Ensuring the protection of minors is our top priority. We believe that robust age verification measures and responsible marketing practices are essential tools in shielding young people from potential harm. Our discussions this week have provided valuable insights for shaping future strategies.”
The event also emphasized key regulatory aspects, particularly the role of the Digital Services Act (DSA) in enhancing platform accountability and the anticipated Digital Fairness Act (DFA) in tackling issues like manipulative design tactics and addictive digital features.
Additionally, The European Lotteries and its members are pushing for a combination of educational initiatives and technical safeguards to further protect minors from gambling-related risks.
