The lawsuit focuses on wagers made through the Fast Code service during the past six years, aiming to secure compensation for impacted bettors.
Maurice Blackburn Lawyers has filed a class action against Sportsbet in the Supreme Court of Victoria, disputing the legality of its Fast Code live betting service.
Launched on 24 December 2024, the lawsuit aims to reclaim millions lost on wagers made during live sporting events.
The case focuses on Sportsbet’s Fast Code system, which enables users to place in-play bets by providing a code shown on the app or website during a call with staff.
Maurice Blackburn Principal Elizabeth O’Shea contends that Sportsbet’s Fast Code service bypasses laws designed to prevent gambling-related harm and breaches regulations by relaying bet details through non-voice communication.
O’Shea explained: “We believe Sportsbet’s use of the Fast Code service not only seeks to sidestep crucial laws aimed at reducing gambling harm but is also unlawful, as essential bet details are conveyed by customers rather than via voice calls.”
She added, “Sportsbet assured the plaintiff and group members that the Fast Code service was lawful, but we argue this amounts to misleading or deceptive conduct in violation of Australian Consumer Law.”
The class action includes individuals who incurred losses from in-play bets placed using the Fast Code service between 24 December 2018 and 24 December 2024, excluding wagers on horse, harness, and greyhound racing events.
