The attempt to gain the UFC's light heavyweight belt coming from the middleweight division turned into a failure for Adesanya. Moreover, the loss to Blachowicz makes it impossible to book the hot fight between Adesanya and Jones, the former dominant athlete in the light heavy. The LoginCasino team follows the latest sports news, explaining the fighters' future plans and if the public still has chances to see the Jones vs. Adesanya bout.

Adesanya Delays His Bout with Jones Losing to Blachowicz

One of the hottest media battles in the UFC belongs to Jon Jones with Israel Adesanya. Even though they now compete in two different divisions (heavyweight and middleweight, accordingly), they had good chances to meet in the golden middle-light heavyweight division.

Preconditions of Jones vs. Adesanya controversy

The Nigeria-born Adesanya is a dominant middleweight champion with an appropriate nickname, the "Last Stylebender," which explains a lot about the fighter. He won the title in 2019 and has two successful defends of the belt. The position of the undefeated champion until the UFC 259 on March 6 allowed him to joke over Jon Jones, who exploded after the UFC gave the first position in the P4P ranking to Nurmagomedov after retention of the latter. In order to face Jones once again, Adesanya gained the right to fight for the light heavyweight title with a new title-holder – Polish athlete Jan Blachowicz.

Being a rather controversial figure, Jon Jones was holding the light heavyweight title from 2011 to early 2020, when he decided to move to the heavyweight division. The "Bones" was successful in 15 title fights and held a P4P number 1 position for years but was moved by the Russian lightweight beast Khabib. In the trash-talking activity in the social media, Jones relied on the number of successful title fights, while Adesanya was accusing Jon of disqualifications and rule violations, along with perfect Nurmagomedov's record and losing only one round(!) in his career (against Conor McGregor).

At the beginning of 2021, Dana White – UFC's president – said he was going to organize the hot bout between Jones and Adesanya in the light heavyweight division. However, the Nigeria-born fighter had to pass his exam in the new division and defeat Blachowicz at the UFC 259 at first. Even though Adesanya was a favorite before the bout and had some advantage at the beginning of the fight, the Polish fighter used his size advantage and successfully defended the title.

What does it mean for the sides?

Such an outcome eliminates the possibility of organizing the bout between Jones and Adesanya in 2021. At first, Israel has to return to 185lb and defend his title against the mandatory contender, and only then come back to 205lb and try to grab a new title. He has already announced that he is going to return to light heavyweight in the future, but it will be no earlier than in the second half of 2021. Only after the new division's possible success will there be chances for the Adesanya vs. Jones clash.

As for Jones, he was happy and ironic enough after the UFC 259. He posted a short video on Instagram of Adesanya's helplessness in the octagon with the bigger opponent, commenting it with sarcastic claims about the possible super fight. At the same time, Dana White has explained that Jones will have the title fight with the Miocic vs. Ngannou rematch winner.

As both Jones and Adesanya are aged 30+, the time is playing against them now. Nevertheless, they still have chances to face each other not only on social media but in the octagon as well.
