The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the new draft legislation regarding the gambling industry legalization in the country.
According to the cabinet’s representatives, gambling operation will be allowed only in hotels as well as requires gambling software and equipment to comply with international standards. Lotteries and gambling games will be regulated separately.
During the recent press-conference, the Prime Minister of Ukraine stated that the main reason for the bill was the excessive number of illicit gaming machines all over the country. The legislation is aimed at removing slot machine halls from the streets and thus protecting people with addiction.
According to Ukrainian media, the law is going to include a license fee (38 million hryvnias) in order to operate a gambling establishment in the capital city. If the population of the city is over 1 million people, the fee for casino operation will be 25m hryvnias; if less – 12.5m hryvnias. A license for betting companies will be 750 thousand hryvnias and more, while gaming machine operators will have to pay 7.5 million hryvnias and poker license fee will amount to 1.3m hryvnias.
As mentioned earlier, the European Gaming and Betting Association called into question the current EU consumer protection standards.
