According to the numbers received from the French online gambling regulator L’Autorité nationale de régulation des jeux en ligne (ARJEL), the igaming market in France grew significantly in 2019 – it has €1.42 bln. revenue. However, the main increase came from sports betting – 27.3%.

It turned out the sports betting brought more money to igaming than any other of its segments. It should be also mentioned that the previous year wasn’t successful for the country: its revenue growth decreased after the significant (56%) increase in 2018.

The stake on sports bets is evaluated at €5.06 bln., including bets with fixed odds and pool bets. The total amount of sports betting accounts within the country is 3.4 mln. and it means a 30%-growth.

What were other segments that influenced igaming revenue?

Of course, sports betting isn’t the only thing users are interested in. For example, there is a noticeable increase in horse racing revenue (5.9%), online poker (5.4%) with the most income from poker tournaments and cash games. Poker is quite popular in France because there are 1.2 mln. players in the country.

The fourth quarter of 2019 was the most prosperous one, as revenue increased by 9.1% and hit €378 mln. Sports betting had the leading position again with football as the most popular type of sports to place bets. Fans made bets estimated at €846.4 mln. The biggest share here belongs to the Uefa Champions League with its €125.2 mln., and then Ligue 1 with €124.8 mln. As for poker revenue, it increased due to tournaments which grew by 22.5%. The growth didn’t pass by horse racing in the fourth quarter as well – it hit €72 mln.

These positive revenue changes motivated the French government to launch a new regulator who would be also responsible for the revenue of land-based casinos and on-track horse betting. L’autorité nationale des jeux (ANJ) is going to come into action in spring 2020. In the fourth quarter of 2019, the government also approved the 2020 budget bill. The bill has an amendment as for gambling taxes calculation that will come from GGR, not turnover.

As mentioned earlier, the British regulator introduced new safety limitations to gambling content on Twitter.
