The Spanish Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGRG) presented the financial side of gambling for the last quarter of 2020 and summed up the previous year. The latest casino news shows the most interesting figures from both reports.
Q4 2020 in Spanish gambling
The last quarter of the year 2020 came with positive figures in both quarter over quarter (20%) and year over year (24.8%) results. The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) for this period totaled €231M. It goes in parallel with the increase of active accounts, with a monthly average result of more than one million and a growth pace at the level of 19% compared to Q3 2020. Interestingly, from 1 million accounts, almost 400K are new game accounts, which is close to a 30% increase compared to the previous quarter. Deposits and withdrawals grew by more than 25%.
A more detailed look at the situation shows that betting and casinos are the biggest contributors in terms of GGR, bringing €103.5M (44.8% of the total rate) and €97.8M (42.3%), respectively. The other sectors were way smaller, but still, poker brought almost €25M (10.8%), bingo €3.9M (1.7%), contests €1.1M (0.5%). Among the other interesting figures were €148.8M on marketing, where affiliated expenses, sponsorship, and promotions grew by more than 30%, with only promotions dropped by 33%.
Overall 2020 results
Even though the year 2020 was tough due to the pandemic, Spanish gambling's overall situation showed a positive trend with a 13.7% increase, which led to €850.8M in GGR. Deposits and withdrawals amount raised by approximately 20%, while the number of active gamblers was on the level of 1.48M (8.4% increase). Marketers also spent more in 2020 and reached the level of €462M (24.2%), with only affiliates' drop, which differs from the Q4 trends.
The annual rates by the sector weren't so positive as for Q4 2020. Thus, betting has dropped by 3.5% and amounted to €365M, which is, however, still the biggest contribution to overall GGR with almost 43%. Casinos took second place with 41.2%, which means €351M and almost a 30% growth year over year. Other branches were also more productive in 2020, where bingo grew by 30% (€16.5M), poker increased by 35.7% (€110M), while contests skyrocketed by 192% (€8M).
