The results of the final reading of the bill were considered in our news about betting. But the step of receiving by Royal Assent was the final move to passing into law. Read the details below.
The Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act was introduced into the Canadian parliament in November 2020. And even after some previous attempts without any success, betting on single-event sports was left with the hope of sponsors.
The main goal of this bill is to repeal paragraph 207(4)(b) of Canada’s Criminal Code, which says that customers are permitted to wager on three games and not less.
This type of betting couldn’t become allowed for a few years. But the bill got support from several operators of the country. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) and media business theScore were the main supporters among provincial lottery operators.
A new opportunity for consumers
The bill was passed by a vote of 57-20 in Canada’s Senate last week. The House of Commons also voted through the bill after the third reading in April.
Canadians will be able to place bets on single games or events for the first time.
