Spanish sports clubs have got good news: betting contracts are allowed by the country’s government for fulfilling.
It means that they have a short transition period till October to fulfill the obligations under the agreements with gambling companies. However, clubs don’t have the right to prolong agreements. Vice versa, they should break all contracts as soon as possible because the period of grace is uncertain.
“The law is the law”
The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzon, is indignant at the current situation connected with sports clubs partnering with gambling-related companies. He emphasizes that during October, betting ads will be totally banned, and it is reckless to act against the law. His indignation is caused by the fact that some La Liga teams continue to prolong agreements for two or three years. At the same time, the Minister says that their managers have been informed about the upcoming ban.
Alberto Garzon has also stated that there has been too much of gambling advertising in sports during recent years. Now, the ads with betting products and services aren’t allowed on clubs’ online media and any digital channel. As for the financial losses that seem a big threat to teams, the Minister doesn’t see any problem in this as Spain’s government is going to help small football teams.
