The Lotteries and Gambling Supervision Inspectorate reported about the huge number of registrations across the governmental self-denial gambling scheme in 2020. The number of applications almost reached an assumed number of gambling addicts in the country. The latest casino news describes the Latvian case.

Latvians Actively Used Gambling Self-Denial Program in 2020

Being one of the most widespread addictions, a gambling one has diverse ways of decreasing it. Amongst the most popular governmental steps within the states with perfectly regulated gambling sectors is providing self-exclusion schemes. Adding oneself to such a list automatically excludes the gambler from entering official land-based and digital gaming venues.

The self-denial register was launched in Latvia on January 1 in the previous year, and within the year, the system received 14 620 requests. Interestingly, this scheme appeared as the Ministry of Health's research outcome, which reported about 16 000 addicts in the country in 2019.

Does it mean that almost all addicts have excluded themselves from gambling?

While one can assume that more than 90% of Latvian gambling addicts entered the healthy path of revival, it can be far from the truth. Thus, the majority of addicts can still be far from a full understanding of the addiction's danger and ignore the self-denial scheme. Also, one has to understand that such a blocking tool can still be overpassed via technical features like using VPN services.

In this case, another study about gambling addiction should be held to speak about the scheme's concrete effectiveness. However, there are no doubts that the tool has become a useful option, especially during the coronavirus crisis. Thus, the Lotteries and Gambling Supervision Inspectorate representative, Signe Birne, confirmed the importance of the self-exclusion tool and admitted it as only one of the ways to deal with gambling addiction.
