How Many Players Are Ignoring the Licensed Sites in Sweden?

Sweden’s gaming regulator Spelinspektionen has surveyed gamblers to find out how many people choose gaming sites without any licenses, or why players don’t know what sites are without licenses.

Out of 3208 players:

  • 7% play on the unlicensed Swedish sites;
  • 12% don’t know if the sites are licensed or not.

That 32% of players of those who preferred gaming sites without licenses said that their gaming went up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the gaming habits of 19% of players were increasing much faster than it was before the pandemic.

10% of players also said that they were spending more time while playing on these sites. Three months of the pandemic and the opportunity to use the websites without any licenses made them more uncontrolled. At the same time, some people stated that this gaming time didn’t change at all.

Reasons for choosing the unlicensed websites

  • 25% of players said that the unlicensed sites gave them more opportunities to win;
  • Almost 20% were trying to avoid the deposit limit (SEK5000).

The most popular kind of unlicensed game is the lottery. 60% of players choose it, even if they play once in a quarter. The next 36% choose sports betting, for example, horse racing.
