ATP Tour officials announced lifting the former prohibition concerning sponsorship from bookmakers and daily fantasy platforms. However, not all the events will be allowed to cooperate with bookmakers. Login Casino follows the latest betting news and explains what will change in the collaboration between ATP Tour and bookies.
The match-fixing incidents that took place in 2018 forced the major tennis organizations to change the attitude towards betting sponsorship. Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) forced the ATP Tour to exclude bookmakers and fantasy sports operators from the list of sponsors. The two-year ban is still active, but the decision to ease the conditions is already accepted.
The Chief Business Officer and Tournament Director of ATP Tour, Eddie Gonzalez, presented the changes to the regarded prohibition. He said that the coming of a new chairman, Andrea Gaudenzi, allowed reviewing the betting sponsorship ban and remove it. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) also supports the idea to lift the prohibition.
What does it mean for ATP Tour and bookies?
Traditionally, the primary driver for suchlike changes is money. Returning of betting firms to sponsoring events means a significant economic boost for the organizer. Gonzalez has confirmed that the cancelation of the recent ban means six-digit additional income at least, reaching even a seven-digit level.
As for the particular lifting, betting companies will be allowed to sponsor the events of 250- and 500-level categories, organized under the ATP Tour name. However, the upper-tier events will still be closed for bookmakers. At the same time, sports fantasy firms will be allowed on 1000-level tennis tournaments.
Even though ATP Tour and ITIA representatives are sure that betting promotion during matches doesn't lead to match-fixing events, this year, there have been a few incidents with tennis players and even a line umpire. According to reports, both players and a judge were accused of breaking bookmaking requirements concerning participants of tennis events.
