There are two main types of betting strategies. The first one is based on a positive progression principle – increase the bet after you win and lower it after you lose.  

This means that you should slowly raise bet amount each time after winning and lower it to the minimum right after losing. This system is frequently used in such games as blackjack, craps, and different roulette variations.

The negative progression’s core principle is to reduce the amount of bet in case of winning, but increase it after the loss. There are many betting systems built on such a principle. The most known and popular of them are the D’Alembert’s formula, the Martingale strategy, the Labouchere system and, of course, the Fibonacci strategy.

The Fibonacci strategy based on the Leonardo numbers (sequence of numbers) was created almost 900 years ago by a famous mathematician Leonardo Pisansky. It is believed that this system can be used in all aspects of our life, which is why it is called "natural progression".

The Fibonacci system’s key element is a cumulative progression, where each next digit is equal to the sum of the two previous ones. It always starts from 0 and 1, but zero is not used in gambling because there is no such bet amount. This is the progression’s model: (0,) 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, etc. The bottom line is that if a player continuously raises his bets, eventually a moment will come when the win pays for all the losses.

It is better to apply this strategy when your bet amount is even (let’s say ten dollars). Thus, the sequence of bets will be: $10, $20, $30, $50, $80, $130, and so on. If a player wins, he should take two steps back: for example, if he won with a bet of $80, then the next one must be $30.

However, the Fibonacci betting strategy’s effectiveness primarily depends on how long the series of bad luck lasts. If a gambler loses for a long period of time, then it is going to be difficult for him to cover the losses. Furthermore, there is a high risk of being left penniless in the game process.

The Fibonacci system does not guarantee that you will get even. In most cases, this is simply not possible. If gambler’s winnings surpassed all losses, he should start from the initial bet again.

The system’s effectiveness largely depends on the game you play. At first glance, raising the bet after each loss may seem stupid. However, the Fibonacci system will bear fruit at a certain point in the game if you do not lose your entire bankroll. Another advantage of the system is that it is very easy to remember and use. You do not have to get a Ph.D. in mathematical sciences to understand how it works. It’s all about adding and subtracting.

The Fibonacci strategy, as most negative progression systems, has its downside as well. The thing is that, anyway, it is nothing more than a mathematical concept. It does make sense, but the strategy will work perfectly only if a player has unlimited funds.

The system will be effective at any stage if you use it properly. However, it can happen that a player faces rather a long series of losses, during which he continues raising the stakes after each loss. Therefore, he can lose everything in case of betting all his bankroll.

This happens if you lose many times in a row. Let's say your first bet was $10. In the case of loss, you have to increase it to $20. The third loss will cost you $30, and if the next time is unsuccessful – $50. In the case of another loss in a row, you will have to raise the stake to $80! Thus, the total amount of losses for you will be no less than $190. And it is only five straight losses, but always there is a big chance to lose more times in a row.

The main Fibonacci betting strategy’s disadvantage is that it works well only in a short perspective. Moreover, it is not intended to cover all losses, since, in the case of winning, a gambler goes two steps back.

Changing the system can be the right choice in case you want to save your bankroll and not spend it right away. It is better to choose the strategy based on the amount you can play. If you have a very big bankroll, you can continue raising stakes even after a long series of losses. However, these tactics will not suit for gamblers with a limited budget.

Casino customers with a tight budget cannot return to the sequence beginning after the winning, but only a few steps back.

Another point is that the system also has a reverse version. Players can choose what best suits their financial capabilities.

Reverse Fibonacci System

As a rule, most strategies have a reverse version. This means that if it is based on a negative progression, you increase the bet after each loss, but in its reverse version, the bet amount has to be raised after each win. The Fibonacci system is no exception.

This option is based on the opposite principle – after each win, you follow the sequence, but in the case of loss, you should return two steps back. Most players, especially in roulette, believe that the reverse version of this strategy has a serious drawback because you can make a profit only in case of frequent winnings. In fact, in order to stay afloat, the number of winnings must exceed the number of losses, otherwise the system will not work.
