For many people, “baccarat” is just something related to the gambling world. Maybe, it is because this game’s fans usually play in VIP gambling halls. In this article, you will find out in detail what kind of game it is and what rules it has.

Baccarat: What Kind of Game Is This?

Baccarat History

Even those who have heard about the baccarat casino game often have no idea how to play it as well as the origin of this exclusive entertainment.

First, there is nothing exclusive about it. Baccarat rules are very simple, and the gambling house advantage for baccarat is the lowest in all casinos. Its origin is the subject of heated debate, so let's consider what we know.

Both the Italian and French claim that this game was invented by their ancestors. Moreover, it has been argued that baccarat is of pagan origin.

The most plausible version sounds like this: In Italian, the word "baccarat” means "zero", as the most common score in this card game is zero. Italian gambler Felix Falguere is credited with creating the first baccarat version at the end of the 15th century. This game quickly spread beyond the borders of Italy and became rooted in France.

It hit the spot to the local aristocratic society and soon became popular among the rich. The French changed some of the game rules, as well as the name. Baccarat became known as Chemin de Fer (French for “railway”). This is precisely the reason why the French are competing with the Italians for the right to be called this card game’s inventor.

So how did the transition from the French baccarat version to the modern one happen? The main feature of Chemin de Fer was the ability to control the bank (though casino took a fee of each win). However, this rule changed when the game crossed the English Channel and appeared in the UK. That is how a new name – European baccarat – appeared. According to the new rules, a gambling establishment controls the bank, and a dealer deals the cards.

At the beginning of the last century, the baccarat game crossed the Atlantic and ended up in North America. However, its popularity there was short-lived. The game came back in the 50s, but this time in Argentina, where it gained popularity in the Mar del Plata casino.

The next stop was Cuba, where the game got the name Punto Banco. Further changes led to the creation of American baccarat, whose feature was to play against casino instead of each other.

By the way, baccarat was brought to Las Vegas by Tommy Renzoni.

Baccarat Rules

Actually, everyone can play baccarat, it is not that complicated. After you read this article, you can make the shift from the "beginner" category to the professional league level. The main thing you should do during the game is to bet.

Prior to the game, you decide how many chips you are going to use and choose where to place a bet. Baccarat casino game has three bet types: on a player, on a banker, and on a tie. The game’s goal is the same as for the other types of gambling – to win.

At the beginning of the game, a banker and a player receive two cards:

By the way, all figure cards and tens are counted for zero points. The scores of other cards are counted by their numbers, and an ace is equal to one point. However, if the total points exceed 9, then only the last digit is counted.

  • the banker gets 10 and 7;
  • the player gets 9 and 3.

The banker wins – 10 + 7 = 17 points (according to the rule, the banker has 7 points). The player loses because 9 + 3 = 12, therefore the result is 2.

This simplified example demonstrates the basic math of this game. In fact, everything is a bit more complicated.

Baccarat Game Natural Winners

Baccarat Game Natural Winners

According to this specific rule, you need to memorize where you bet.

A player becomes a natural winner if the first two cards’ total is 8 or 9.

In this case, cards are not dealt again, and the player can take his/her winning.

The Third Card Rule

If no one gets a "natural win", then you may need another card. It can be taken if the player (who enters the game first) has a total of only 6 or 7 points.

What about the Banker?

This is where everything starts to get complicated. If the player does not take an additional card, the banker (who has 6 or 7 points) draws a card in the range from 0 to 5. In other cases, the range depends on the cards taken by the player.

9, 10 or an ace

a card from 0 to 3 points

a card from 0 to 2 points

6 or 7

a card from 0 to 6

4 or 5

a card from 0 to 5

2 or 3

a card from 0 to 4

In the end, it remains only to calculate the results and identify the winner (the one with the biggest score).
